June – Monthly letter from Pat
Surprise! This month brings a new look for our website. I hope you like it and find it easy to navigate. This is the project of a foreign exchange student who has spent the last ten months in Sigourney. She wanted to give back to her adopted community with this wonderful gift. We can never thank her enough. Eva is from Macedonia and lives with John and Diana Wehr. We have taken many pictures,so please check out all the tabs including the calendar and the gallery.
I am pleased to begin the “Movie in the Park”. It is something I have wanted for several years and it is finally ready for launch on June 5. As a little girl, I remember watching movies in a vacant lot in Fremont. The price of admission was five cents. I am sure you have like memories. I found that on June 6, 1933, in New Jersey, a person hung a bedsheet between two trees; thus creating the first drive-in. Ours isn’t a drive-in, but it will be movies under the stars.
I am looking forward to the Farmer’s Market beginning on June 8th. Kids Against Hunger and the Ministerial Alliance will sell sandwiches. What a great place to buy the fresh fruits and vegetables that are produced locally. It helps you get the freshest food possible and helps the vendor pocket a little cash. If you have produce, please consider being a vendor. And if you don’t, please come to support those that do. Selling begins at 4:30.
And while you are in the court yard at the Farmer’s Market, please go inside to vote. June 8th is the primary election date in Iowa. There are several races for you to consider, at the state and county levels.
We have flags remaining available for sponsorship. The new American flags will be up throughout the summer. You can honor someone specific or a group with your sponsorship. Just call or e-mail the City Clerk’s office for more information. Cost of sponsorship is $25.00.
The annual Fourth of July city-wide celebration is fast approaching. There is more information at the side of the first page. Angie and I certainly appreciate the work of Ruth Manchester and Jenny Thompson in organizing this year’s celebration. Cities of all sizes cannot do for its residents all that needs to get done without the volunteers who generously and graciously give of their time. Volunteers are always needed, maybe not always for a large project, but sometimes just for small ones that don’t take a lot of time. Consider volunteering for your church, your service club or your city.
Its picnic time; whether it is the family reunion, the block party, the friends-it is a great time of the year. Take that time to enjoy your treasures.
Until July,
Pat
P.S. Now that we mow lawn each week (at least), remember to not throw the cut grass into the street. When that happens, it contributes to storm sewers clogging and possibly backing up into basements. Not good! Do you part in helping to prevent this unwelcome event!!

Hello !
I think that the site looks absolutely amazing. Whoever did it, really captured the purity of the community. Well done Eva! It is very likely, after seeing this website, that Sigourney will find its way up to my travel plan as a priority destination.
Wonderful Site – I was Eva’s coordinator and I’m thrilled to see what a great job she did – she was very excited about it and loved her time in Sigourney!
Hello Sigourney,
What an absolutely wonderful web site. I live in Colorado and decided to visit you today. Your City offers so many positive programs, I was very impressed as I had no idea so much was taking place. I have a family history in Sigourney and spent many summers there. Ask Sherrie. It is a beautiful and wonderful place. So many priceless memories and the best people ever! I will be visiting very soon and can’t wait to be there. In our little town of Fountain, Colorado we are experiencing and implementing similar steps to improve the health of our community also. But, the Farmer’s Market here will never be as good as an Iowa Farmer’s Market!!! Tomatoes here I come.
Glad you like the website! Thanks for all your nice comments as well. I will look forward to meeting you when you come to Sigourney later this month. Sherrie sits next to me in the office.
