Finally, September!!
I have put off writing this in hopes of a real brain storm of information to delight you. Alas, to no avail. So here goes the ramblings.
Had a wonderful day on Friday, the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Keokuk County Courthouse. The day was beautiful weatherwise and the ceremony on the bandstand was impressive. Many thanks to Iowa Supreme Court Justice Brent Appel for giving an interesting and inspiring address. He spoke about some Iowa court cases where we led the nation in civil rights and took to heart the words “justice for all”. The lithograph of the U. S. Constitution was presented to the Board of Supervisors. It was donated to the county by members of the court house staff. It is hung between the Auditor’s office and the Treasurer’s office. Stop by to view it.
Many of the participants dressed in period costumes and gave presentations about the court house and interesting events surrounding the courts.
I always wondered why the Board of Supervisors selected September 17 as the day of the celebration. In 1910, the court house was officially dedicated in mid-September! Now we know. It makes sense that they select a date that comes close to the original date. Anyway, it was a nice event and when you see Judge Lucy Gamon, tell her thanks for organizing it. She did a masterful job of organizing and emceeing. Thanks Judge Lucy.
Several of us are representing the city at the annual League of Cities Conference this next week in Iowa City. It is always a good conference. We return with new ideas, re-engerized and thankful we live in a great little city. We have our own problems, but they can’t compare to other towns.
Go Cobras!! The football team is off to a great start on the season. This week is Homecoming week, so make sure you all wear your black, gold and purple on Friday. Certainly wish the Volleyball, Cross Country and other football teams well during their respective seasons. The flag football season is having a good year as well. And we can’t forget the cheerleaders, they certainly have the pep, zip and energy to get us enthused for the game! Thanks girls. Hope to see you at the parade at 2:00.
Make sure you purchase a shirt to support the Alzheimer’s Walk on October 10. Pam Schwenke and friends are again sponsoring the walk to raise funds and awareness of Alzheimer’s, a disease that attacks many people. This year the walk is on 10-10-10. You can certainly remember the date! Join us at the high school for a stroll to Manor House.
That’s enough for today-have a good one
Pat
